Biography
Jacob Lawrence (1917–2000) was an American painter known for his works detailing contemporary Black life and historical figures and moments.
Jacob Lawrence's first narrative series, "The Life of Toussaint L'Ouverture," 1936–38, was inspired by Lawrence's desire to celebrate black cultural expression and pride. L'Ouverture was born a slave in 1743. He was part of the rebellion in Haiti from its beginnings and rose to become commander-in-chief of the revolutionary army.
